A short guide to legal training

The professional masters aim to train lawyers who can immediately integrate into the world of work. For this,  compulsory internships  of at least three months are established as well as an internship report.

Research masters aim to train academics or researchers. They allow you to continue your doctoral studies. A  dissertation  must therefore be written by the student, followed by a defense before a jury.

However, it is important to point out that the border between research masters and professional masters is almost non-existent in practice. Thus a student, whatever the purpose of his master’s degree, will be able to enter the world of work or continue his university course without difficulty.

You will find many useful tips for finding your Master’s degree: here

LLMs

For those who would like to give an international dimension to their studies, exchanges and partnerships are organized such as the double  French law and English law degree at Paris I  in partnership with Kings College London.

There are also very famous foreign LLMs like that of  Columbia  or  Cornell . More than a diploma, the Anglo-Saxon LLM is a guarantee of excellence in addition to mastery of legal English. These qualities are highly appreciated by international firms. There are also French-style LLMs such as the  LLM in international Business Law from Paris I.

To find out more about this training, an LL.M. guide can help you discover all of these training courses and get very useful feedback from former students.

UNIVERSITY DIPLOMAS

Added to this are  university diplomas and certificates .  These diplomas have in common that they are organized by universities – and therefore do not have a national dimension – are prepared in one or two years and provide the student with an in-depth study  of legal matters .

However, they do not replace university diplomas and are only simple complements.

BUSINESS SCHOOLS AND SPECIALIZED MASTERS

College is not the only path to the legal profession. The student can, if he wishes, join a major business school through  parallel admissions.  He will then have to take a competitive exam.

Some schools organize joint competitions but others like HEC, ESCP , ESSEC or EM Lyon do not hesitate to go it alone and set up specific competitions with their own coefficients. However, overall, the exam is in the form of a summary note related to the subject studied by the student, an English test and an oral exam. Also, it is not uncommon for the student to be asked to have obtained an optimal score on the  (tests aimed at assessing the ability to use and understand the French language) and (Aptitude test for management studies and business management).

These “parallel admissions” competitions are accessible from bac +1 but for those who wish to become a lawyer it will be necessary to validate, at least, their first year of master’s degree in law before attempting the competitions accessible to holders of a bac + 4 or 5 (and beyond). There are also admissions  based on qualifications  (ESSEC, EDHEC, etc.) allowing students with a good academic record (but also professional experience) to join the most prestigious schools. These bridging paths are beneficial in that they allow young lawyers to diversify their areas of expertise and to have a global vision of the business world.

The cost of studying in a business school is however very high – €11,700 per year for HEC – the choice of such studies is however not without interest. Large firms, more specifically business firms, are very keen on this type of profile.

Another possibility is also available to the student; integrate a  specialized master’s degree . This is not a state diploma but a business school diploma, a  label created by the CGE  (Conférence des Grandes Écoles) allowing the student to acquire dual skills in one year or to deepen a specialization as evidenced by the master’s degree in corporate tax management from EM Lyon or international lawyer from ESCP. The recruitment level is generally set at bac + 5 or bac + 4. These training courses are very  expensive . Tuition costs can go up to €17,000. However, they have the advantage of offering, in addition to a strong network of students, quality teaching.
